These monogram letters will take your projects up a notch by embellishing them with applique. Printable letters make applique easy!

monogram letters

What is Applique?

Pieces of decorative fabric are attached to another piece of fabric with decorative stitching.  I made one of these monogrammed totes for a little birthday gift and it was quick and easy.  You can even include a coordinating crayon roll.

I  purchased the totes awhile ago (okay years ago and found them in the “great craft room clean-up”). Find similar totes at large craft stores.  Use this machine applique technique to embellish t-shirts, onesies for babies, aprons etc. No worries if you can’t find a premade tote bag. I have a step by step tote bag tutorial.  Making a tote is a super easy sewing project.

Monogram Letter Supplies

  • Lightweight Heat n’ Bond Lite’
  • something to applique, a tote is used in this project
  • fabric
  • iron
  • sewing machine
  • thread
  • scissors
  • pencil or pen
  • printer and paper to print the templates
  • printable letters templates

Applique Step by Step

It just a few easy steps you can embellish a variety of projects. You won’t believe how easy it is! I use interfacing to make monogramming simple.  HeatnBond lite is an two-sided iron-on interfacing that has a paper backing on one side.

Types of machine applique

Here are three different types of applique that you can use to monogram your projects with these letters.

Straight Stitch Applique

For this project, I am using a technique called straight stitch applique. It is the simplest method and easily dressed up any project.  Once washed the edges of the fray can fray giving texture and interest. No worries if you don’t like that I show you what product to use to prevent fraying below. Another example of the straight stitch without interfacing is on this birthday hat.

Zig Zag Applique

These monogram letters could also be zig-zag appliques.  This technique keeps the edge of the fabric from fraying. The stitch length on the sewing machine can be adjusted to sew a wide zigzag or close together to make a satin stitch.

Reverse Applique

I think reverse applique gives a wow. I think it is especially great for felt projects. You can see how I used reverse applique for this birthday crown.

How to machine applique monogram letters

Trace your letter onto the paper (smooth) side of the HeatnBond Lite.  The letter must be reversed. Following the HeatnBond instructions, iron it to the wrong side of the fabric that you want to applique to the tote.

machine applique

Cut out the letter and peel off the paper.

tote-4There is now adhesive on the back (wrong) side of the letter. Flip the letter over and it is ready to go.

tote-5Again following package instructions, iron your letter to the tote bag.  Keep the letter towards the top so you are able to easily sew with the sewing machine.

how to applique

Machine stitch around the letter.  You can also hand stitch around the letter.  A blanket stitch looks cute!

appliqueI used fray check around the edges to keep the fabric from fraying.  You might decide to let the edges fray—–it looks good too!

tote-8

Finished! It is so quick and you have a really useful gift. These monogram letters could be used to monogram towels, shirts, blankets. The possibilities are endless.

I hope you will give it a try.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Instant Pot Key Lime Cheesecake

Instant Pot Key Lime Cheesecake

Yes! Dessert in the Instant Pot. This rich creamy cheesecake won’t disappoint!

For Crust:

  • 1 c graham cracker crumbs
  • 3 T butter (melted)

For Cheesecake:

  • 16 oz Cream Cheese (softened to room temperature)
  • 2 t Flour
  • ½ c Sugar
  • 2 t Vanilla
  • Zest of 1 Lime
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 2 T Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 3 T Key Lime Juice

Topping:

  • ¾ c Heavy Whipping Cream
  • 2 T Sugar
  • Zest of 1 Lime
  • 10 Thin Lime Slice Halves

For Crust:

  1. Spray a 6” springform pan with non-stick spray and set aside.  In a small bowl combine graham cracker crumbs and melted butter and stir together with a fork. Press firmly into the bottom of the sprayed springform pan, then set aside.

For Cheesecake filling:

  1. With an electric mixer beat together: cream cheese, flour, sugar, vanilla and zest of one lime. Scraping sides and bottom to ensure all ingredients are mixed together well (to avoid any lumps). Add eggs one at a time and then egg yolk. Beat until just combined. Mix in Key Lime Juice (if you can’t find Key Lime Juice, you can substitute lime juice) and Whipping Cream until just combined. Pour over crust. Tap pan gently on the countertop a few times to get rid of any large air bubbles.

Cooking:

  1. Add 1.5 cups water to pressure cooker insert. Then place the trivet in bottom of the insert. Lay a paper towel over the top of the springform pan (dry paper towel) and then wrap tightly with aluminum foil. Place pan in the pressure cooker using a sling. Lock lid in place and cook at high pressure for 37 minutes. Once cooking is completed let pressure release naturally for 18 minutes.

  2. Carefully remove from the pressure cooker and remove foil and paper towel. Set on wire rack and cool for 10 minutes. Then carefully run a sharp paring knife around the perimeter (between cheesecake and pan edge). Let cool for 20-30 minutes and then release the springform pan edge. Cover lightly and refrigerate overnight.

Topping:

  1. Using a large spatula, remove springform pan bottom from cheesecake and place cheesecake on serving platter. Place whipping cream and sugar in a mixing bowl and then whip until stiff. Fold in the zest of ½ of a lime (keep remaining ½ of lime to zest over the top for a lovely presentation).

  2. Place whipping cream in a piping bag with a large open star tip and pipe onto top of the Instant Pot cheesecake, then zest remaining half of lime over the top of the whipped cream and center of cheesecake. Place lime slice halves around the perimeter of cheesecake equidistance apart by sliding gently into whipped cream.

  3. Refrigerate (covered) until ready to serve. Enjoy!

How am I able to always have perfectly brown mushy bananas on hand? I keep them in the freezer. Whenever I am stuck with that one spotted banana that no one will eat I throw it in the freezer. I have quite a collection, some get pretty ugly and wrinkly but I still use them.

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Here are my favorite banana bread recipes. The first one is adapted from Allrecipes. This is a yummy moist bread. The chocolate chips send it over the top!

Good After School Questions for Kids

$

Never be at a loss with things to talk about with kids after school! Printable after school questions for kids find out a little bit more about how your child’s day went and help you hear something other than usual “good,” “fine” or “ok” answers. If you ever need to lighten the mood after school try out these kids jokes. They are sure to bring a smile! Would you rather questions are another good conversation starter.

Questions for kids

After School Conversation Starters

Have you ever tried to talk to your kids about how their day was at school and all you get is one word or one sentence answer? I often feel shut down (especially with my teen) but these after school questions for kids are a fun way to get a little bit more out of them and give you things to talk about. These topics while simple require them to think a little bit harder. Questions like “How did somebody help you today?” or “What do you think you should do more of at school? What do you think you should do less of?” helps them reflect on their day and gives you a little window into their world.

You can make up the rules and determine how many questions your child gets to pick each day.

after school conversation starters printable

Printable Questions for Kids

To keep track of your questions for kids, download, and print in color. Cut apart the questions and place them in a 12oz mason jar and glue the labels on top of the lid, and on the front of the jar. The labels can also be printed on sticker paper and attached to the jar or container.

Keep a jar of questions in your car or somewhere in your home where you’ll both remember to play. I like to keep mine in the kitchen because most of the time that’s where my kids hang out after school while they look for an afternoon snack. These After School Questions for kids are a great way for both you and your child to connect and help you learn a little bit more about their thoughts and feelings.

Taking a moment to ask and then really listen to their answers makes kids feel important and that what they think and feel matters. We all need to feel valued and loved. The simple act of acknowledging and caring about your child’s day helps to make them feel special and that their education is important.

after school questions for kids

Things to talk about after school

  • Was there anything you wish you had at school that you didn’t have today?
  • Did you raise your hand in class today?
  • Who did you enjoy talking with the most today?
  • Did you see the principal today? What was he/she doing?
  • Did anyone have anything fun or interesting to talk about?
  • What do you think the most important part of school is?
  • Tell me one question that you had today. Was it answered?
  • What was the best thing that happened at school today?  (What was the worst thing that happened at school today?)
  • What were the other kids eating for lunch?

Positive affirmations to share with friends to inspire and uplift! These Life Quotes are another way to encourage you and your friends.

if you could see yourself through my eyes you would know how incredible you truly are

It is no secret that psychologists believe the thoughts you are thinking right now are creating your future. One of my all-time favorite books is The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale (aff link). I love that man so! The book is full of amazing ways to have a productive peaceful and positive life!

Watch your manner of speech if you wish to develop a peaceful state of mind.  Start each day by affirming peaceful, contented and happy attitudes and your days will tend to be pleasant and successful. Norman Vincent Peale

I believe we can make a difference in the lives of others by sharing love and encouragement.  Why not be that person to give hope to others? Let those around you know how special they are. Your encouraging word might be just what they need. Joy will increase as you give it and never seems as bright when you keep it for yourself. Give love joy and support to others and you will have a joy greater than you could have ever imagined.

Positive Affirmations

  • You are more than enough!

  • Trust yourself, you know more than you think you do.  Benjamin Spock
  • In case you forgot to remind yourself this morning: Your butt is perfect. Your smile lights up the room. Your mind is insanely cool. You are way more than enough AND you are doing an amazing job at life.
  • You make the world special by just being in it!
  • Thank you for being you!

How do you make a carved pumpkin last longer?

You might ask how do I keep my carved pumpkin from rotting.  Dip or spray it with a solution of three gallons water and 3 tablespoons bleach or make a natural spray with peppermint essential oil. Mix about 10 drops of peppermint oil, one cup of water or vinegar and a teaspoon of liquid soap to help keep mold at bay.  Peppermint has anti-fungal properties, which will help keep fungus and mold away.
